Why a Good Demo Still Stalls

Everyone smiled, asked questions, and thanked you. Then the deal stopped moving. Positive meeting energy is a poor substitute for a decision path.

Read the signal

A stall usually means some part of the evaluation stayed unresolved: business urgency, ownership, technical fit, budget, or the steps between approval and purchase. The answer is rarely another broad recap of the features the buyer just saw.

Make the next move

Reconstruct the meeting from observable facts. Who described a problem in their own words? Which capability did they connect to a metric or task? Who committed to a next action? Send a recap that separates demonstrated fit from unanswered questions, and propose the smallest test that could resolve one question.

Language you can adapt

Illustrative wording:

We covered the intake workflow and you confirmed it matches the team’s process. We did not confirm how IT would review access controls. Would a 20-minute technical review with your IT owner help you decide whether to continue?

The wording is a starting point. Replace the problem, evidence, and request with details the buyer actually gave you. If those details are missing, ask a question before sending a polished message. Specificity makes it easier for the buyer to correct your understanding and easier for you to see whether the opportunity is moving.

Decide what happens next

If the buyer accepts a specific test, put it on the calendar with an owner. If they cannot identify what would change their decision, ask whether this project is still a priority. Update the forecast to match the answer.

Write the result in your deal notes as an observable fact: who responded, what they agreed to do, and when. A friendly reply is useful, but a decision, a named owner, or a scheduled review tells you more. If the next step remains vague, treat that as information about the deal rather than a reason to send the same follow-up again.

Use these examples responsibly. Describe your product, pricing, and customer results accurately, and adapt every suggestion to the buyer’s stated process.
